Former
champion jockey Darren Beadman posted his
first stakes-winner for Godolphin when imported Holy Roman Emperor gelding
Duca Valentinois (IRE) took out the $200,000 Listed Scone Cup on Friday.
Drawn badly last start when unplaced in the Group III Hawkesbury Gold Cup, Duca
Valentinois rebounded with a stylish length and a half victory in the 1600
metre feature.
At a time when Godolphin is undergoing a search for a permanent replacement for
previous head trainer John O'Shea, Beadman reminded the powers that be that he
is ready and able to take the reins full-time.
Beadman was buzzing after watching Melbourne-based Kiwi jockey Michael Dee give
the five-year-old gelding a copybook ride.
"I won the Scone Cup as a jockey," Beadman said. "It was a
better feeling today.
"The key to him is to switch him off. If you get the first half mile right
the rest will work out."\
Dee certainly ride to instructions, switching Duca Valentinois off along the
rails, enjoying the fast pace set by Fabrizio and Royal Tudor before angling
across heels into the straight.
"Everything just worked out beautifully," Dee said.
"Early on in the race he relaxed beautifully and coming to the 600 metres
he just started getting stronger and stronger on the bridle.
"It was just a matter of getting him into the clear."
Duca Valentinois is from Fruits of Love mare Love Valentine and is the 64thstakes-winner for Aquis Farm's Holy Roman Emperor, who returns to Queensland this
spring at a fee of $9,900.
