A descendant of one of Western Australia's most revered families, Magnus colt Malibu Style earned a second stakes win and a first in Melbourne when cruising to victory in Saturday's Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.
Ridden by Steven Parnham for his father Neville, Malibu Style came clear in the final stages to defeat Legless Veuve (Pins) by two and a quarter lengths with favourite Crystal Dreamer (Stratum) a nose back in third. (photos Grant Courtney).
It completed a good day for the Parhams after Steven's brother Chris rode Viddora to victory in the Group III RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville while Brad Parnham kept the home fires burning with a winning double at Ascot.
Previously a winner of the Listed R.S. Crawford Stakes (1000m) at Ascot in December, Malibu Style advanced his record to 7 wins, 5 seconds and 7 thirds from 29 starts with earnings of $399,725.
"He has really, really thrived here and I don't think I've seen him looking better," Parnham said.
"At home he tended to get a bit edgy before a race but he's nice and settled here.
"This was the race I picked out which I thought might just suit him and we had a race a couple of weeks back over 1000 metres and he performed very creditably."
The 5yo gelding was a $40,000 purchase by his trainer from the Bowness Stud draft at the 2013 Inglis Classic Yearling sale.
He is the third foal of the unraced Fusaichi Pegasus mare Origami whose dam Born Western (Best Western) was one of four stakes winners out of the grand broodmare Rich Haul (Haulpak).
They were led by the Group II winner and multiple Group I placed The Heavyweight (Zeditave), Listed winner and useful stallion Zedrich (Zeditave) and the Listed winner Happy Strike (Gold Fever).
Bowness sold Origami for just $8,000 to Premium Bloodstock Services at the 2014 Easter Broodmare sale.
The Duporth filly she was carrying was sold for $30,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions Perth Yearling sale.
Origami has a weanling filly by promising young sire Gingerbread Man and was covered by the son of Shamardal again last spring but she tragically died in February.
