Adelaide Cup Hero Annus Mirabilis on the Sydney Cup Trail

Mark Smith - Tuesday March 14

Trainer Stuart Webb has put a jumping career on hold for Annus Mirabilis (IRE) who is likely to head north for the $2 million Sydney Cup at Randwick on April 8 following a dominant win in Monday's $400,000 Group II UBET Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville.

Celebrating his 20th birthday, Regan Bayliss added the Group II feature to his maiden Group I win in the Newmarket Handicap on Redkirk Warrior at Flemington on Saturday.

After being caught wide the trip, Annus Mirabilis (IRE) took control on the home turn and stuck to his guns resolutely to hold the challenges from the Robbie Laing-trained Double Bluff (IRE) (Azamour) and the favourite Master Of Arts (Mastercraftsman). (Grant Courtney photo)

"He is a super stayer and has a great set of lungs," Bayliss told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

"I knew the distance would not be an issue. I won the Bagot on him and he turned his form around from last start when he had no luck."

Purchased out of the Lloyd Williams stable as a jump prospect, Annus Mirabilis (IRE) was a winner at Leopardstown for Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore team.

The son of Montjeu scored a lone win at Pakenham for Team Williams before being sold to clients of Stuart Webb at the start of the season.

He has a Tattersalls Book I pedigree being a half-brother to 6-time Group I winner and former shuttler Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill) and the Epsom Derby winner Ruler Of The World (Galileo).

The 6yo Montjeu gelding is out of the stakes-placed Kingmambo mare Love Me True, a half-sister to successful stallion Bite The Bullet (USA).
