After losing one son of Written Tycoon, Winning Rupert, to Newgate Farm during the week, Bjorn Baker welcomed back another son of the Woodside Park stallion, the Group I Doomben 10,000 hero Music Magnate, who opened his campaign with a dominant win in Saturdays $200,000 Group II Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill.
Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, the 5yo gelding tracked the early speed set by the Joe Pride-trained Ball Of Muscle before taking control in the final stages to defeat Kuro by one and a quarter lengths with Ball Of Muscle hanging on for third. (photos Steve Hart).
Music Magnate set up a possible clash with the champion Winx in a fortnight in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick although Baker is considering heading south.
"We can look at Melbourne but more than likely we'll give him a little bit of a let-up with the main focus the TJ Smith."
"It's always a bit nerve racking with a horse like that coming back.
"Trialling well and racing well are two different things.
"So it was good to see him come back like that and it was a really good ride by Kerrin.
"I can honestly say he's the best Written Tycoon in my stable now."
The 5yo gelding advances his overall record to 7 wins, 4 seconds and 1 third from 14 starts for earnings of $942,125
