A routine veterinary procedure went wrong for a winner at Pakenham on Tuesday.
The Jerome Hunter-trained Ella Violet justified $3.20 favouritism in winning the last race of the day, the Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1200m but struck a problem at the post-race testing examination.
During the post race blood sample being taken, the needle broke away from the syringe and the mare had to be transported to an equine hospital for testing and possible treatment.
Hunter said it was a disappointing end to a winning day.
"She's still at the hospital. I wasn't there at the time but it was just one of those things and it happens," Hunter said.
"It's bittersweet as it was a terrific win but hopefully it will all sort out and we'll soldier on."
