There
were a plethora of meetings in Australia and New Zealand on Boxing Day, but
this debut winner by Fastnet Rock, bred and retained to race by one of our most
successful breeders, caught our eye as a One to Watch.
Three year-old gelding Australiana is a homebred for John Singleton's Strawberry
Hill Stud and is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.
Sent to the Beaumont track at Newcastle for his debut in a 1350 metre maiden, Australiana
led all the way for Rachel King and cruised to the line to win by five and a half
lengths as favourite.
A half-brother to last season's Group I placed filly Happy Hannah, he is the
second foal of Absolute Joy, a Zabeel half-sister to Group I fillies Tuesday
Joy and Sunday Joy, the dam of champion mare and $4.5 million earner More
Joyous.
Australiana's grand-dam Joie Denise won the Queensland Oaks and another family
member is Group I winner Fenway, so classic aspirations are sure to form future
planning for Australiana.
Strawberry Hill Stud sold the third foal from Absolute Joy, a colt by More Than
Ready (USA) at Inglis Easter in 2016 for $925,000 to Sheikh Mohammed bin
Khalifa Al Maktoum.
Absolute Joy has no yearling, but produced a filly by Fastnet Rock this year.
