Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Friday February 5

There were eight juvenile heats at the Randwick trials on Friday morning and four of them were won by the progeny of Newgate Farm’s Golden Slipper winner Capitalist.

His heat winners were Kalashnikov, Collier Bay, Russian Standard and Captivant, who won on debut last October and was last seen finishing a good fourth in the $1million Golden Gift behind Sneaky Five.

Captivant was the first winner for Capitalist and has come back from a summer spell in great shape.

The Peter and Paul Snowden trained colt was allowed to find his feet early by James McDonald, but really powered to the line to win his 735m heat by more than a length under a hold with his best work on the line.

Captivant looks to have come back in great shape with a Golden Slipper campaign sure to be on his program.

Running slightly quicker time was impressive colt Russian Standard, who was very sharp from the gates and led all the way to beat Sunlight’s full brother Dio by a length.

Trained by Mark Newnham, Russian Standard was having his first trial and looked an absolute natural.

A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for Darby Racing/De Burgh Equine, Russian Standard is a half-brother to juvenile stakes-winner Nomothaj from Group III VRC Maribyrnong Plate winner Real Stolle, so he’s certainly bred to be up and running this season.

Newgate Farm will offer his yearling half-brother by Pariah at Inglis Easter as Lot 36, so will be hoping to see Russian Standard make his mark during the autumn.

Other two year-old heat winners were: Whitson Boy (Written Tycoon), Robodira (Husson (Arg), Vesuvio (Brazen Beau) and Sealion (Astern).
