Trainer Gary Portelli is convinced he has Hong Kong-bound Rebel Dane going as good as ever following a barrier trial win at Rosehill on Tuesday morning.
Rebel Dane trialled over 1000 metres on the course proper and cruised past handy sprinter That's A Good Idea to win the heat under visiting Victorian hoop Ben Melham.
"We thought we had him going well and today's trial confirmed it," Portelli said.
"I left the blinkers off on purpose in the trial because they are his secret weapon, or not so secret now I suppose."
Rebel Dane wore blinkers when causing a boil over in the Group I Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last month.
The seven-year-old entire is set to be Australia's lone representative at the Hong Kong International meeting at Sha Tin on December 11.
"We didn't think it was possible he could improve but that's what really cemented the deal because the owners were concerned that he was a bit far into his preparation," Portelli said.
"Usually he's had enough by this time, he shows signs that he's tired and just doesn't do well but since he's come back from Moonee Valley he's done nothing but improve.
"He has a bit of an ego about him since he won I think."
Rebel Dane will depart for Hong Kong on December 4.
