The
$3million Group I MVRC Cox Plate on Saturday at Moonee Valley might have the
mighty mare Winx seeking back to back wins in Australia's weight-for-age
championship, but the $1million Group I MVRC Manikato Stakes tonight has drawn
together one of the best fields of Australian sprinters you could imagine whose
collective earnings top $29million.
Australian thoroughbreds are renowned the world over for their speed and
toughness and this 11 horse field is a clear illustration of what Australian
breeders do best.
Ranging in age between three (Capitalist) to nine (Buffering), these dazzling
speedsters have amassed a staggering $29,117,639 in prizemoney.
Their success highlights the massive prizemoney on offer in the shorter races
not only in Australia but throughout the world, given only one of these horses
has ever won beyond 1400 metres.
Their collective earnings average out at $2.6 million per horse, not a bad
return when you consider of the seven runners offered at auction as yearlings
none were super expensive. Click here to read our Sale Mail story from earlier
this week.
$7.2 million earner Buffering (Mossman) was the cheapest bought for just
$22,000 at Magic Millions and Golden Slipper winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon),
the most expensive, also sourced at Magic Millions for $165,000.
Every horse in the field is a Group I winner, barring Fell Swoop (Not a Single
Doubt) and even without a win at the elite level, he too has won over $1million
in prizemoney.
