Strong Victorian Results on Day 1 Magic Millions

Media Release - Wednesday January 13

After an unprecedented twelve months, a sigh of relief was taken by all yesterday, when a few minutes shy of 12:00pm, the Minister for Racing in Queensland the Hon. Grace Grace, officially opened the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale.

The sale, which is the first yearling sale to be conducted in a live format since the COVID-19 pandemic started, achieved a clearance rate of 85%, a median of $170,000 and an average of $245,694.

Barry Bowditch, Magic Millions Managing Director was optimistic ahead of the sale but realistic at the same time given the outside influences that were out of everyone’s control.

Offering 168 lots on the first day of the sale, Victorian vendors achieved some strong results from quality stock.

Early in the day, Coolmore went to $625,000 for a half-brother to the Victorian bred, Kubrick, to be trained by Chris Waller.

Kubrick who was bred by Victoria’s Two Bays Farm is the winner of the Bondi Stakes and his half-brother from Fastnet Rock mare, Alcatraz was also bred by the team down at Mornington Peninsula.

$625,000 Written Tycoon colt from Alcatraz.

Sold privately, the colt was offered in partnership with Suman Hedge Bloodstock, Two Bays Farm and Grant Bloodstock’s Silverdale Farm.

Rob Petith of Silverdale Farm said after the sale, “We are absolutely thrilled, this is our first yearling sale presenting under our own draft. We are delighted with the result, the Written Tycoon colt out of Alcatraz has been very popular over the last few weeks of parading.”

Not long after lot 27 passed through the ring, Three Bridges knocked down a filly in lot 37 for $500,000. Three Bridges purchased the dam of this broodmare when she was in foal with the filly for $350,000.

The filly is from the same family as Hong Kong galloper Hawkshot (known in Hong Kong as Beauty Legacy) and as Stakes winner Power Scheme.

Daisy Hill sold a filly out of the Fastnet Rock mare, And Rock as lot 53.

And Rock, has three foals to race who are all winners. And Rock, is also the dam of Barcali who was sold to Hong Kong and is now known as Storm Warnings. The filly offered for sale is bred by Daisy Hill and sired by Pierro.

She was knocked down for $170,000 to the Freedman Brothers.

Not long after, Musk Creek Farm presented the only Medaglia D’Oro for sale at the Gold Coast.

The filly out of a Stakes winning American mare, Apologynotaccepted, is the half-sister to Curlin’s Approval and won three of her four wins in succession.

Knocked down for $150,000 the filly heads to Kevin Corstens Racing.

International Thoroughbred Solutions just couldn’t go past lot 88, who is a colt by Written Tycoon, out of a Bel Esprit mare, Bel Selene

Going to $320,000 for the colt and bred on the exact same cross as Victorian Champion Ole Kirk. International Thoroughbred Solutions were the lucky purchasers of Ole Kirk when he was a yearling at the 2019 Melbourne Premier sale.

Yulong sold five yearlings on day one of the sale for a total of $1,315,000 with their highest lot being knocked down for $600,000 to All Winners Thoroughbred.

Lot 148, a filly out of a General Nediym mare and by Exceed and Excel, is one of five foals for the Cerberus Gal who has had four foals to race with all being winners and includes Irukandji as one of her progeny

Irukandji is the winner of the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes and has amassed over $238,000 in prizemoney.

Yulong’s next highest lot was knocked down to Mick Price Racing for $300,000 and out of the Dubawi mare Caricature.

With strong results for Victorian breeders on day one of the sale and Magic Millions touting the sale as a record for results on day one sale, stay tuned as we bring you results from day two.
