Husson's Swoop Dog Powers Home in Tasmanian Guineas

Mark Smith - Friday January 8

Under a perfectly timed ride by Kyle Maskiell, the John Blacker-trained Swoop Dog came with a barnstorming finish to overpower First Accused in Friday’s Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) at Launceston.

The 3yo gelded son of Husson (ARG), defeated First Accused (Turffontein) by one and a half lengths with One Lotto (Super One) a nose back I third.

Swoop Dog failed to make his $40,000 reserve as a yearling.

It was the second win for Swoop Dog who advances his record to two wins and a second from four starts with earnings of $97,060.

The bay gelding races for his breeder Armidale Stud and PE McMullen after being passed in short of his $40,000 reserve at the 2019 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale.

Swoop Dog is the best of two winners from as many to race out of the very accomplished Black Hawk mare Swooper (GB), a Listed winner of 12 races and over $565,000.

Purchased at the 2014 Inglis Great Southern Bloodstock Sale for $24,000, Swooper has a yearling filly and a filly foal by Alpine Eagle but was not covered last spring.

Swoop Dog becomes the 17th stakes-winner for Aquis farm’s Husson (ARG).
