Saxon Warrior Leading First Crop Sire at Tattersalls December Foal Sale

Tara Madgwick - Sunday November 29

Coolmore young gun Saxon Warrior (Jpn) is the only son of Japanese sire sensation Deep Impact standing in the Hunter Valley this spring and his first foals had everyone paying attention at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale during the week.

Demand for his progeny remained strong throughout the sale and last Friday astute pinhooker Philipp Stauffenberg went to 280,000gns (A$529,000)  for a filly offered by Norris Bloodstock.

The bay filly was bred by Chris Humber and Hunscote Stud out of Archangel Gabriel, a full-sister to Group I winner Prince Arch, who has already produced two winners.

The star filly was the third highest priced filly of the sale so far and the most expensive foal by a first crop stallion.

Andy Lloyd, manager of Hunscote Stud, later explained what attracted them to Saxon Warrior, “He won a strong Guineas and I think he’s a really good stamp of a stallion. You can see some of the results he’s been getting, apart from this one, and I think he has a real chance of making it.”

Saxon Warrior had nine foals sell at this sale for an average 98,689 guineas making him the most successful first season sire by average and put him just into the Top 10 sires by average for the sale.

Saxon Warrior stands at a fee of $17,600 and his first Australian foals are being born this spring.
