Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Thursday July 27

I'm sure it has happened before, it's just that I can't remember when, the last time a stallion was crowned champion sire of two-year-olds without capturing one of the rich plumbs, the Golden Slipper, Blue Diamond Stakes or Magic Millions 2yo Classic.

Snitzel can cap a remarkable season should the Kelly Doughty-trained Cabeirien become his 33rd individual juvenile winner when he tackles the QTIS Two-Years-Old Handicap (1050m) at Doomben on Saturday.

The flashy chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail was a beaten favourite when making his career debut at Eagle Farm back on January 21.

Subsequently gelded, Cabeirien resumes on Saturday off the back of two barrier trials the latest when winning at Ballina on July 18.

Owned and bred by Peter Breen along with Doughty's husband Gary, Cabeirien is a half-brother to stable stalwart Flamboyer (Clang) who has earned over $557,000 with nine wins and 17 placings.

His highlight came in the 2016 Listed Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast where he defeated Saluter and Stratum Star.

Flamboyer and Cabeirien are out of the unraced Zeditave mare Zedatier who was also bred by Breen and Doughty. She is out the Tierce mare Tiercette.

Purchased by Gai Waterhouse as a yearling for $14,000 from the Newhaven Stud draft, Tiercette won three races in Sydney.

A daughter of the stakes-placed Twig Moss mare Oust, Tiercette became a very reliable broodmare.

Eight of her 10 foals have got to the races and won, highlighted by the $450,000 earner Tierqualo (Sequalo) whose nine wins were highlighted by the Listed Falvelon Quality and Listed Queensland Day Plate.

Tiercette is also the dam of the stakes-placed Eminence Grise (Sea Road) the dam of the stakes-placed near $500,000 earner Black Cash (Show A Heart).

Snitzel has had a remarkable 74 two-year-old runners this season.

His earnings are almost double that of second placed Manhattan Rain, who had the Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign, third placed Fastnet Rock who had the Blue Diamond winner Catchy and fourth placed I Am Invincible who had the Magic Millions winner Houtzen.

Major contributors for Snitzel have been the Group I ATC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Invader, Group II  BRC Champagne Classic winner Tangled, Group III ATC Widden Stakes Teaspoon and Group III CRC Black Opal Stakes winner Trapeze Artist.

Snitzel has also owns a Group I in New Zealand this season with the ARC Auckland Diamond Stakes hero Summer Passage.
