In what is a unique move in Australia this year, the state of NSW will conduct its annual racing industry awards night, Racing’s Night of Champions, as a peopled event rather than remotely.
Being held in the Ballroom at Royal Randwick on Thursday 22 October at 7pm, the black-tie function will be attended by key notables of the industry.
While jockeys are not permitted to attend in adherence to Covid-19 regulations for the sport - trainers, owners and strappers will be in attendance to accept their awards and those of the top horses of the 2019/20 racing season.
“Racing’s Night of Champions has been held by the NSW Racehorse Owners’ Association for over 35 years and we are thrilled that we have been able to keep the tradition going this year,” said Tony Mitevski, the Association’s recently appointed President.
“Obviously the event will be held adhering to strict Covid-19 protocols, however we are confident that the evening will maintain its reputation as the ‘night of nights’ of New South Wales racing.”
The iconic gold horse head trophies are presented for nine categories from Champion 2yo through to Champion Stayer, with the Champion Horse of the Year being the pinnacle prize of the evening. The NSW Trainers’ Association, sponsors of the Middle Distance Horse of the Year Award, is dedicating trophy in memory of their respected colleague, the late Rick Worthington.
This year, a combination of a points system and voting by a panel of industry experts was used to determine the winners.
Racing NSW will again present their awards on the night, with categories covering the human heroes of the racing industry. The coveted Bart Cummings Medal, awarded to the most outstanding NSW performer among jockeys and trainers throughout the season, is the highlight.
“Guests will enjoy excellent food and wines, musical entertainment and a glamour event after having a drought of this type of function for so many months,” Mr Mitevski added.
Tickets to the awards, which will be recorded and aired post-event on Sky Thoroughbred Central, are still available @ $210 per person. For more information and bookings go to nswroa.com.au or call Jane Henning on 0421 353 871.
