Brazen Beau Draws First Blood

Mark Smith - Wednesday September 23

A good deal of joy for the sponsors of Wednesday’s Darley Spring Preview (900m) at Flemington with Contract Racing’s homebred Brazen Beau colt General Beau looking the consummate professional in capturing the first-two-year-old race of the season.

Ridden by Jamie Kah for trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, General Beau eased across the face of the field from his outside barrier to sit on the outside of the Written Tycoon colt Finance Tycoon and that pair would fight the race out.

General Beau took control of the race at the 200 metres and won untouched by two and a quarter lengths.

Darley’s Northwood Park showpiece would take plenty of positives from the fighting third of the Godolphin homebred filly The Globe.

After racing greenly when obliged to race three wide without cover, the first southern hemisphere runner for the top-class Frosted (USA) stuck to her guns in the closing stages to finish three-quarters of a length behind Finance Tycoon.

Mathew Ellerton indicated the Listed Maribyrnong Trial would be the immediate target for the son of Brazen Beau.

“That's the fastest we’ve asked him to go, he got there pretty quick and has been a natural all the way through,” Ellerton said.

“We might look at Saturday week. I imagine he will go home and eat up. He’s adept at the straight now so he will have two looks at it.

“He’s a strong little horse He is one of those that came in a bit rough at the start of his prep. It took ten days to knock the edge off him and he has improved ever since.”

Bred and raced by David and Jenny Moodie and Nick and Gayle Psaltis, General Beau is the second winner from three to race out of the lightly raced Lonhro mare Phosphorescence who is a half-sister to stakes-placed Double Jeopardy (Exceed and Excel) out of the top-class Nediym’s Glow (General Nediym) whose four wins included the Group III Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes and Group III Blue Diamond Prelude..

Phosphorescence has a yearling filly by Nicconi and a colt foal by Shamus Award.

Best On Breeding
Winless for almost two years, the horse that defeated the likes of Anamoe, Jigsaw, Kallos, Extreme Warrior and Hitotsu in the 2021 Blue Diamond Prelude gets his chance to break back into the winner's circle in Saturday's Group III Aurie's Star Hcp (1200m) at Flemington.
Tom Magnier Pays $3.4million for She’s Extreme
A Group I winner of the ATC Champagne Stakes (1600m) at two and then a Group I VRC Oaks (2500m) winner at three, She’s Extreme was extremely good and that’s why she sparked a protracted bidding duel at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale before Tom Magnier won the day with a final bid of $3.4million.
Widden Pounce for $1.15million G1 Winner Startantes
The Robert Heathcote stable have had a lot of success with the progeny of top producer Funtantes and the best of her four winners is Group I Tatts Tiara winner Startantes, who was snapped up by Widden Stud for $1.15million at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale on Thursday.
General Beau Triumphs in Always Welcome
The winner of three of his first four starts at two, culminating in the defeat of Anamoe, Jigsaw, Kallos, Extreme Warrior and Hitotsu in the 2021 Blue Diamond Prelude, the 5-year-old entire General Beau has gone 111 weeks without a win before Saturday’s Listed Resimax Group Always Welcome Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.
Yulong Swoop to Secure Kimochi for $2.2million
It was the second trip around the Inglis sale ring for quality Brave Smash (Jpn) filly Kimochi at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale on Thursday evening and while she made just $21,000 at the weanling sale in 2021, she shot out the lights out this time when knocked down to Islay Vale (Yulong) for $2.2million.
General Beau Dominant in the Blue Diamond Preview
General Beau was a menacing figure in the parade ring with his commanding physical presence before proving every bit as dominant on the track in Saturday’s Listed Neds Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) for colts and geldings.
Dual Oaks Winner Sells for $1.6million, Star Producer for $1.15million
It’s rare enough for any filly to win more than one G1 Oaks event and rarer still for them to be offered at public auction, so the appearance of Satono Aladdin (Jpn) mare Pennyweka (NZ) at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale produced some fiscal fireworks before she was knocked down to Panthalassa Syndicate (Yulong) for $1.6million.
$1million for So You Think Mare Banana Queen
A homebred for Arcella Thoroughbreds, talented So You Think mare Banana Queen has been a favourite of the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou stable working through her grades over the past three seasons before winning the Group III Tibbie Stakes at Newcastle last year to cap her appeal as a broodmare prospect.
Will He Line Up in the Blue Diamond?
The decision whether General Beau lines up in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes does not seem any closer to resolution after the strapping son of Brazen Beau scored a heart-stopping win in Saturday’s Group II Neds Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) for colts and geldings at Caulfield.
Blueblood Colt a 30th Stakes-Winner for Justify
Not shuttling to Australia this spring, Justify posted a milestone 30th stakes-winner in the UK overnight when progressive colt Capulet won the Listed Chester Dee Stakes (1m2 ½ f) for the Coolmore partners.
