Can Pretty Penny Put the Icing on the Cake?

Tara Madgwick - Thursday September 17

Served by Coolmore’s undefeated Triple Crown hero Justify (USA) last Saturday, blue hen Pretty Penny has only one thing missing on her resume and that’s a Group I winner, a situation that may be rectified this Saturday.

In 2016 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, well known bloodstock agent Colm Santry signed the docket at $570,000 for stakes-placed Encosta de Lago mare Pretty Penny on behalf of good clients Denis and Claire O’Brien.

She was already a proven stakes producer and has not missed a beat since then.

Pretty Penny has had seven named foals to race all of them Black Type performers by six different stallions.

“I’ve never seen a mare produce so many Black Type horses by very different sires,” said Colm Santry.

“She is an amazing looking mare, big and strong with plenty of scope and she puts that into her foals.

“Pretty Brazen was the first foal she had for us and was the most beautiful big, strong filly, which is why she made $700,000 at Inglis Easter.”

Two of Pretty Penny’s foals, Dollar for Dollar and Pretty Brazen have accepted for the Group I MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield this Saturday.

“Dollar for Dollar was second in this race two years ago and showed he was back in form with a close up fifth in the Bobbie Lewis (G2) at Flemington last Saturday, while Pretty Brazen is top class and backs up from a great win in the Lets Elope(G2),” said Santry.

There is more to come for Pretty Penny in the pipeline with two unnamed fillies by American Pharoah (USA).

“The two year-old has been retained and will go into training with Chris Waller and the yearling is up at Coolmore with a decision still to be made on her future,” Santry added.

Pretty Penny is one of a stellar group of mares booked to Justify in his second Australian season at stud with his first foals now on the ground receiving high praise for their size, strength and quality.
