Jackpot Prince too strong in 2017 Belmont Classic

Darryl Sherer - Sunday July 23

Jackpot Prince came from last to defeat the odds-on favourite Gatting in Saturday's Listed Belmont Classic (2200m) at Belmont.

Last around the home turn under apprentice Clint Johnston-Porter with the $1.80 favourite Gatting just in front of him, Jackpot Prince ($10) rushed home to reel in Persian Princess ($41) in the final strides to score by a head with Gatting a further half length off third.

Jason Miller trains Jackpot Prince in partnership with Geoff Durrant, who also owns the three-year-old, and told Perth Racing the son of Casino Prince has the makings of a genuine stayer.

"At the corner I thought he might run on for a nice fourth or fifth, but he really lengthened stride," Miller said.

"Credit to the horse and to the ride. You might see in a year's time a Perth Cup horse."

Jackpot Prince won consecutive races at Belmont before finishing third last time out in the Listed Aquanita Stakes over 2000m.

Miller said Jackpot Prince will now be headed to the spelling paddock.

"He'll be going out now. It's been a long campaign - he probably needed a spell a couple of runs ago."
