Juddmonte Bred Siskin Wins G1 Irish Two Thousand Guineas

Tara Madgwick - Friday June 12

Juddmonte Farms homebred Siskin was undefeated last year ending his season winning the Group I Phoenix Stakes at The Curragh and he has picked up right where he left off winning the Group I Irish Two Thousand Guineas (1m) overnight at the same venue.

Ridden by Colin Keane, Siskin raced to a dominant length and three-quarter win over the Coolmore owned Galileo colt Vatican City, a full brother to Group I winners Gleneagles, Happily and Marvellous.

“Siskin is a good horse. In the last month we were very confident he would get the trip. We had a great pre-season with him and the ground was in his favour. We have loads of options now, more than likely he'll now be going for the Sussex Stakes,” said his trainer Ger Lyons.

Siskin is now five wins in as many starts and is from the last US bred crop of Juddmonte Farms homebred sire First Defence, who was sold to Saudi Arabia in 2016.

He is a three-quarter brother-in-blood to First Defence’s best offspring Close Hatches, a five time Group I winner rated the Champion Older US Mare in 2014.

Siskin is the first winner for Bird Flown, a winning half-sister by Oasis Dream to stakes-winner Barsanti and to the dam of Close Hatches, her grand-dam being Juddmonte blue hen Monroe.

The descendants of Monroe include Group I winners Xaar, Senure, Cityscape, Logician and the Australian bred Group II winning sire Domesday.

Monroe is from legendary matriarch Best in Show, whose presence is everywhere here in Australia as she is also the fourth dam of champion sire Redoute’s Choice.
