Another Promising Debutant for Headwater

Mark Smith - Wednesday May 20

Revelling in the heavy conditions, the Tony and Maddysen Sears-trained gelding Be Water My Friend made the best possible start to his career in a QTIS 2-Y-O Hcp over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday to chalk up the fifth winner for Headwater.Be Water My Friend as a yearling

Ridden by Michael Cahill Be Water My Friend looked to be thoroughly enjoying his first outing.

Sitting up on the speed set by Tan Dinh, the son of Headwater railed around the bend to go on for an untroubled one and three-quarter length win over the favourite Better Lad (Better Than Ready) with Winter Rain (Rubick) two and a quarter lengths back in third.

Consigned by Gainsborough Lodge to the 2019 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Be Water My Friend was passed in shy of his $60,000 reserve.

Headwater

He is the first foal of the unraced Duporth mare Whisper Of Hearts who is a half-sister to the Group II ATC Phar Lap Stakes winner Traitor (Mossman) from the family of Group 1 BRC Queensland Derby winner Brambles (Savabeel).

Gainsborough Lodge purchased Whisper Of Hearts for $12,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

It has been an exciting week for Headwater after his son Wisdom Of Water went to the top of the betting for the Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes following his two and three-quarter length romp in the Group III Ken Russell Memorial at the Gold Coast last Saturday.

The handsome son of Exceed And Excel will stand at a fee of $13,750 at Vinery in the forthcoming season where he will be joined by another son of Exceed And Excel in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes hero Exceedance.
