Sun Stud Reduce 2020 Fees

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday May 6

Sun Stud has announced reduced fees for 2020 on an opportunity packed roster featuring a broad selection of proven and promising sires covering a wide range of bloodlines.

“Broodmare owners are facing unprecedent times and Sun Stud has acted accordingly in dropping fees by an average 25% across the board,” Sun Stud’s Sales & Nominations Manager, Phil Marshall points out.

“We’ve always regarded ourselves as the ‘breeders’ farm’, heading up initiatives such as the ‘no payment until live foal’, which also remains in play for 2020. Sun Stud is a firm believer in the strength of the Victorian industry and just want to ensure breeders have every opportunity in these extraordinary times.”

Sun Stud will offer broodmare owners a diverse team of nine for this spring and whether you are looking to breed a Cups horse of the future or a fast two year-old with an eye to the $1million VOBIS Showdown, there is a stallion here to turn dream Into reality.

Source of Group winners Hawkshot, Stars of Carrum and Moor Gait, along with 2YO black type winner, Power Scheme, Melbourne and Australian Cup hero FIORENTE has proven a great source of quality staying prospects in a relatively short time and it doesn’t stop there.

Fiorente stands at a fee of $17,600

He also boasts one of Victoria’s emerging 3YO stars in Tony Noonan’s Florent, winner of the $430,000 VOBIS Sires’ Guineas (1600m) in April.

Speaking of VOBIS, MAGNUS is one of the most successful Victorian stallions of all time and among his 350 plus winners of $46 million include 2020 Group winners, Streets of Avalon (Group I Futurity Stakes) and Halvorsen (Group I Standish Handicap).

Magnus stands at a fee of $15,400

The best active sire son of Flying Spur, Magnus comes from the revered female family of Black Caviar and All Too Hard which was boosted again this season with the emergence of another exciting stakes-winning juvenile In Written Tycoon's Ole Kirk.

Owners of Written Tycoon mares in Victoria would do well to consider a mating to Magnus as the Written Tycoon x Flying Spur nick has already had success producing Group I winner Booker and stakes-winner Banquo.

Spring will also unveil the first runners for dual Group I winner, PALENTINO whose yearlings sold up to $160,000 and averaged $108,333 in Book 1 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale and have, not surprisingly, found their way into leading stables.

Palentino stands at a fee of $14,300

A stunning flashy chestnut that has stamped many of his offspring, Palentino is a grand-son of one of the world's best sires in Galileo and his own sire Teofilo (IRE) has enjoyed great success in Australia and his last crop of Australian bred yearlings have been highly sought after this year averaging $199,642.

8-time Victorian Champion Sire, BEL ESPRIT again represents tremendous value for a stallion who pushed through the 700 winner mark in 2020. Among the top 20 active sires in the nation by winners, this season’s stakes winners include Admiral’s Joker and Tactical Advantage, whose earnings fall just shy of $1million.

Bel Esprit stands at a fee of $7,700

He also has a brilliant two year-old in Queensland conceived Kisukano, who has won three of four starts including $500,000 Aquis Jewel at the Gold Coast in March.

Sun Stud eagerly awaits (along with 100+ broodmare owners) the arrival of the first Australian progeny by ‘The Chosen Son’ – NATIONAL DEFENSE. The Group I winning Champion juvenile is Invincible Spirit’s highest rated 2YO at stud in Victoria and was one of the nation’s most popular first season sires last spring, covering 159 mares.

National Defense stands at a fee of $9,900

The Invincible Spirit sireline goes from strength to strength in both hemispheres with his champion sire sons I Am Invincible and Kingman paving the path for those who follow.

Snitzel’s Group II winning sprinter, THRONUM has been supported with high end mares in his two seasons at Sun Stud and his initial progeny are poised to sell at 2021 yearling sales.

Thronum stands at a fee of $7,700

The fastest 2YO by influential sire of sires Northern Meteor, FIGHTING SUN continues to be a reliable source of winners with his 2020 stakes performers including exciting 2YO, Entrapped, Redelva Stakes runner-up, Roccabascerana and Chris Waller’s 2YO, Celestial Sol – third on debut in the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes in March – while his yearlings sold up to $200,000 at Melbourne Premier.

Fighting Sun stands at a fee of $7,700

Clearly one of the best value sires in Australia, Not A Single Doubt stallion, SQUAMOSA has a ‘cult like’ following and had Kiwi Ida win her fourth stakes race in 2020 before grabbing third in the Group One Waikato Sprint … stakes placed 2YO Amosia has also starred in New Zealand … while Flemington stakes winner and Group II runner-up, Order of Command has returned in fine fettle.

He was seen at his best at Warrnambool on Wednesday winning the Listed Wangoom Handicap. Order of Command set a weight carrying record (62kg) in the time honoured Western District sprint and took his overall record to eight wins from 21 starts with prizemoney in excess of $600,000.

Squamosa stands at a fee of $4,400

Meanwhile, More Than Ready’s stakes winning 2YO, READY FOR VICTORY has only had a handful of runners to date, but they include Gerald Ryan’s Macleay, who won impressively on debut in April and is now a contender for the Group I JJ Atkins Stakes next month.

Ready for Victory stands at a fee of $4,400
