Nicks That Click – Why We Need the Outcross Sire

Tara Madgwick - Monday February 24

When you have a commercial broodmare population saturated with the blood of a champion sire, you need an outcross sire to bring in some hybrid vigour and take the breed forward.

Tagaloa is one of 12 stakes-winners by Lord Kanaloa from mares carrying Sunday SilenceIn Japan, Sunday Silence has become to them what Danehill has to us and then along came Lord Kanaloa.

With just three crops racing, Lord Kanaloa was third on the Leading Japanese Sires List by earnings in 2019 behind Deep Impact and Heart’s Cry, both of those stallions sired by Sunday Silence.

A brilliant sprinter miler that combines the blood of Mr Prospector and Storm Cat, Lord Kanaloa is the right man for the right time in Japan as he has proven a highly compatible partner for the legion of mares that carry Sunday Silence blood.

Lord Kanaloa has sired 15 stakes-winners to date, four of them Group I winners which include last Saturday’s Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes winner Tagaloa.

12 of those stakes-winners are bred from mares carrying Sunday Silence blood including all four of his Group I winners.

There are three yearlings by Lord Kanaloa entered for Inglis Easter, but only one is from a mare carrying Sunday Silence blood and that’s Lot 468 from Arrowfield Stud, a filly from Glare Channel (Jpn), who is a grand-daughter of Sunday Silence.
