Nicks That Click – Double Sir Tristram and Double Eight Carat

Tara Madgwick - Sunday December 1

We read a lot about horses carrying a double cross of Danehill, but a stakes-winner last Saturday got us thinking about how the double up of Cambridge’s Stud’s breed shaping sire Sir Tristram (IRE) has been performing and their legendary blue hen Eight Carat (GB).

Ranier - image Steve HartWhen Godolphin’s Ranier charged home for Kathy O’Hara to win the Group III ATC Festival Stakes, he claimed his third stakes win taking his earnings in excess of $480,000.

His pedigree features a 4 x 5 double cross of Sir Tristram, something we are starting to see a lot more of with the rise of the Lonhro sireline notably through Pierro.

The double up of Sir Tristram runs at 55.1% winners to runners with 97 stakes-winners headed by 18 Group I winners including Pierro’s Group I winners Pierata and Pinot.

Fastnet Rock is a significant factor in the growing success of the double up as his grand-dam Gatana is by Sir Tristram’s Golden Slipper winner Marauding and he accounts for six of the Group I winners bred this way, while Zabeel’s champion son Savabeel has produced another four.

Ranier is also an interesting horse for his 3 x 4 double up of Eight Carat, line breeding to this influential matriarch running at 62.6% winners to runners and producing 22 stakes-winners headed by Group I winner Verry Elleegant.

The arrival of 2020 yearling catalogues has many people pondering pedigree as they go about early inspections and there will be plenty of examples of these types of pedigrees that will no doubt include stakes-winners of the future.
