Run over four fabulous days at Flemington, the 2019 Melbourne Cup Carnival featured 26 stakes races ranging in distance from 1000m up to 3200m with several sires producing multiple stakes-winners at this most celebrated meeting.
Former Coolmore shuttler Declaration of War (USA) was the obvious standout performer siring Vow and Declare to win the Group I Melbourne Cup (3200m)and Warning to win the Group I Victoria Derby (2500m), but he was not the only sire to produce more than one stakes-winner.
Cox Plate winner Ocean Park, who retired to Waikato Stud in New Zealand, has had a great season with his star performer the Group I ATC Epsom Handicap winner Kolding, who remained in Sydney to win the $7.5million ATC Golden Eagle on Derby Day.
Even without Kolding, Ocean Park still put his mark on Flemington siring Oceanex to win the Group II Matriarch stakes (2000m) and Tofane to win the Group III Furphy Sprint (1100m).
Victoria’s number one sire Written Tycoon was the other sire to produce more than one Flemington stakes-winner posting Teleplay to win the Group III Jim Beam Stakes (1400m) and Banquo to win the Listed World Horseracing Springtime Stakes (1400m).
A super consistent sire of sprinter milers, Written Tycoon stands at Woodside Park Stud.
Special mention needs to be made of Westbury stud’s Reliable Man (IRE), whose star daughter Miami Bound was the only horse to win two races at the carnival taking out the Group II Wakeful Stakes (200m) and then the Group I Kennedy Oaks (2500m).
The other sires to enjoy Group I success were Commands (Melody Belle), Deep Impact (Fierce Impact (Jpn), Exceed and Excel (Exceedance), Galileo (Magic Wand (IRE) and Nicconi (Nature Strip).
