The 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale of Two-Year-Olds will feature the progeny of an outstanding selection of stallions, with proven champions, tried and true performers and emerging talent.
The Champions
Savabeel is the undisputed king of New Zealand stallions. The Waikato Stud titan has won the Grosvenor Award (champion New Zealand sire) for five consecutive seasons, as well as the Dewar and Centaine Awards for Australasian and worldwide earnings four times each.
Karaka has played a huge part in Savabeel’s spectacular success. He has sired 18 individual Group One winners, of which 14 went through the ring at Karaka – LuciaValentina (NZ), Sangster (NZ), Soriano (NZ), Scarlett Lady (NZ), Savvy Coup (NZ), Costume (NZ), Diademe (NZ), Brambles (NZ), Sword of Osman (NZ), Nicoletta (NZ), Savaria (NZ), Hall of Fame (NZ), Hasahalo (NZ) and Embellish (NZ).
As well as his outstanding older performers, Savabeel has also had elite success with his two-year-olds, such as Sword of Osman and Pasadena Girl (NZ).
His Ready to Run graduates have also gone on to great things, with Sangster winning the Victoria Derby (2500m), International Stakes (2000m) and Auckland Cup (3200m), and Hall of Fame capturing the Levin Classic (1600m).
The 2019 Ready to Run Sale catalogue features 18 of Savabeel’s progeny. Lot 407 is a half-brother to the four-time Group One winner and exciting sire Sacred Falls (NZ) (O’Reilly). Lot 302 is out of a half-sister to the Group One-winning Savabeel stars Diademe and Embellish. Lot 252 is a full-sister to The Real Beel (NZ) (Savabeel), who finished second in this year’s $1m Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m).
In terms of Group One success across multiple countries, Cambridge Stud star Tavistock (NZ) (Montjeu) also belongs in the highest echelon of New Zealand’s stallion ranks. He has sired elite winners in New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong such as Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ), Australian Derby winners Tarzino (NZ) and Tavago (NZ), Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther (NZ), plus Singapore Derby winner Infantry (NZ).
Tavistock is the sire of 13 two-year-olds in the Ready to Run Sale catalogue. Lots 124 and 275 are sons of Group One-winning mares Pondarosa Miss (NZ) (High Chaparral) and Banchee (NZ) (Oratorio) respectively. Lot 29 is out of a half-sister to the champion So You Think (NZ) (High Chaparral). The dam of Lot 197 is a half-sister to the dam of Werther. Lot 389 is out of Full of Spirit (Flying Spur), a Group Three winner and Group One placegetter who is a half-sister to four stakes winners including two-time New Zealand Horse of the Year Bonneval (NZ) Makfi).
Showcasing (Oasis Dream) shuttled to Haunui Farm from 2011 and 2017 and made a massive impression in this part of the world, siring 164 winners from 285 runners to date including 18 stakes winners.
In the 2018-19 season, Showcasing set a modern-day New Zealand record with 12 individual two-year-old winners.
There are 15 progeny of Showcasing in the Ready to Run Sale catalogue. Lot 251 is a full-brother to the stakes-winning two-year-old Flaunting (NZ) (Showcasing). Lot 349 is a half-brother to Group One winner MacO’Reilly (NZ) (O’Reilly).
The catalogue also features the progeny of top-class Australian-based sires such as Dundeel (NZ) (High Chaparral), Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado), More Than Ready (Southern Halo), Pierro (Lonhro), Sebring (More Than Ready), Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor).
Tried and True
Consistently producing terrific results on the track, these stallions have demonstrated their ability season after season.
Few fit that bill better than the outstanding Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill). Himself a million-dollar yearling at Karaka and five-time Group One winner, Darci Brahma retired to The Oaks Stud and has gone on to produce 440 winners from 605 runners, 40 of them at stakes level.
He has sired nine Group One winners, including D B Pin (NZ) in Hong Kong and Gust of Wind (NZ) in Australia, and his current headline act is the brilliant three-year-old Catalyst (NZ) – an exceptional winner of three stakes races this spring.
Darci Brahma has five two-year-olds in the Ready to Run Sale catalogue, including a son of Group One performer Filante Etoile (NZ) (Soviet Star).
Per Incanto (Street Cry) has been another tremendous performer. Standing at Little Avondale Stud, he has churned out 165 winners from 273 runners, 13 at stakes level including Group One winners Shadows Cast (NZ), Santa Monica (NZ) and Dal Cielo (NZ).
Per Incanto has enjoyed particular success with two-year-olds, siring 20 individual winners at that age.
There are 18 Per Incanto two-year-olds in the Ready to Run Sale catalogue. Lot 128 is a son of the stakes winner Princess Annaliese (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy). Lot 240 is closely related to the recent Sydney stakes winners Stampede (High Chaparral) and Just Thinkin’ (So You Think).
The late, great Pins (Snippets) carved out an exceptional career in his own right. He has sired 758 winners from 1102 runners, with 84 individual stakes winners including nine at the highest level.
Aerovelocity (NZ) and Ambitious Dragon (NZ) were multiple Group One-winning superstars in Hong Kong, El Segundo (NZ) won the Cox Plate (2040m), and Katie Lee made history in 2009 as the first (and still only) horse to win both the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) and 1000 Guineas (1600m).
The Champion stallion’s second-last crop will be offered at this year’s Ready to Run Sale, with 7 two-year-olds going under the hammer including Lot 326 out of the Group One winner Costume (NZ) (Savabeel).
Westbury Stud’s Reliable Man (GB) (Dalakhani) is another successful source of winners having recently sired 2019 New Zealand Oaks victor Sentimental Miss (NZ). The Group One-winning stallion will offer 17 lots at the upcoming Sale. Lot 274 is a half-brother to Group One winner Pondarosa Miss (NZ) and Group One placed Ecuador (NZ). Lot 317 out of Group Two placegetter Chuckle and also a half-brother to Group winners Hoofit (NZ) and Crack Me Up (NZ). Lot 147 is out of the Group Two-winning mare Regal Kiss.
Emerging Talent
A number of exciting sires are currently emerging across Australasia, with many of their progeny on a rapid rise to stardom.
Dual New Zealand Horse Of The Year Mongolian Khan was sold at the 2013 Ready to Run Sale for $220,000. A Champion at three, the promising stallion was first to win both the New Zealand and Australian Derby’s in 2015, as well as dominating the million dollar Caulfield Cup. The successful NZB graduate will offer 22 lots of his first crop of two-year-olds at the upcoming Sale.
Windsor Park Stud shuttle stallion Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) has made a strong start in both hemispheres, siring 69 winners from 128 runners in his first two European crops and 11 winners from 39 runners in this part of the world.
He has sired three individual stakes winners, including his star New Zealand filly Aretha (NZ), who has won the Group Two Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) and Group Three Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) and placed in two Group One races last season.
The seven Charm Spirit two-year-olds in the Ready to Run Sale catalogue include Lot 312, a son of Group One performer Chaparrone (NZ) (High Chaparral).
Waikato Stud’s Ocean Park (NZ) (Thorn Park) has proven to be an outstanding source of winners, and last Saturday at Randwick he sired his first Group One winner with Kolding (NZ) in an outstanding renewal of the Epsom Handicap (1600m). Ocean Park has 12 progeny in the Ready to Run Sale catalogue.
Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) was a two-year-old of the highest quality himself, winning the Group One Golden Slipper (1200m) and four other stakes races. He stands for a fee of A$44,000 at Coolmore Australia, and his first crop of two-year-olds have started strongly with two Group placegetters in Sydney.
Vancouver will be represented by six progeny at the Ready to Run Sale. Lot 88 is out of the multiple stakes winner Moonlight Bay (Catbird). Lot 142 is out of a half-sister to the dam of champion sire Fastnet Rock.
Other exciting up-and-coming sires who feature in the catalogue include highly rated Australian-based stallions Deep Field (Northern Meteor), Dissident (Sebring) and Kermadec (NZ) (Teofilo).
The 2019 Ready to Run Sale will be held at Karaka on November 20 and 21.
Every horse entered in NZB’s Ready to Run Sale has the opportunity to Breeze Up with the last 200m of their work filmed and timed. Breeze-Ups are set to be conducted at Te Rapa Racecourse on 21 & 22 October and clips will be available online later that week.
