Inglis Chairman's Sale Falls Short of High Standard

Media Release - Friday April 13

Group 1-placed mare Gypsy Diamond topped the Chairman's Sale Breeding Prospects at Riverside Stables at $1,350,000.

The three-time Stakes-winning daughter of Not a Single Doubt – in foal to Yarraman Park's leading stallion I Am Invincible – was a clear standout, selling to Yu Long Investments.

She was one of seven purchases for leading buyer by aggregate Yu Long, who also bought Gypsy Diamond's dam Gypsy Tucker for $800,000 among its buys.

Both mares were part of the Finemore Thoroughbreds & Planette Thoroughbreds reduction consignment.

Other highlights included Group 1 winner Savaria, in foal to Exceed And Excel, selling to Bruce Perry Bloodstock for $850,000, blueblood Sia (Fastnet Rock x Hips Don't Lie) reaching $780,000 for buyer Aquis and all seven stallion shares (Sebring x 2, Hinchinbrook x 2, I Am Invincible, Nicconi and All Too Hard) selling strongly.

In total, 11 lots sold for $500,000 or more.

Yu Long's Mr Zhang was pleased to be taking so much quality away from the sale.

"By purchasing these mares we have added nice commercial mares to our Broodmare band,'' Mr Zhang said.

"They are in foal to Australia's two hottest stallions and we are looking forward to bringing their progeny back to yearling sales.''

Inglis' Managing Director Mark Webster admitted the sale did not meet the high standards Inglis sets itself but vowed to work on making it a success again in the future.

"The Chairman's Sale was introduced last year with the objective of being a channel to trade elite breeding prospects, and was a great success,'' Webster said.

"We have achieved some excellent results this year for the elite mares in the catalogue, and exceeded the gross of last year but I fear we tried to grow this format too quickly and did not maintain an elite standard across the catalogue for mares and foals.

"Last year we conducted the sale immediately following the Easter Sale which worked for the limited 90 lots we offered. This year with 200 lots catalogued we did not allow enough time for inspections.

"Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

"We have made great leaps this year with our transition to Riverside but acknowledge we have not got everything right. I feel with some changes next year we can build the Chairman's Sale into a marquee event for trading elite level breeding stock.

"All that aside, I would like to especially thank Waratah Thoroughbreds, as well as Finemore Thoroughbreds and Planette Thoroughbreds for entering their reduction consignments into the sale and wish them all the best in the future.''

At the conclusion of the sale, the average was $228,396, median $160,000 and gross $24,210,000.

The final sale of a big fortnight of action in Sydney is the Australian Broodmare & Weanling Sale, which runs for three days from midday Sunday at Riverside Stables.

A catalogue of 649 quality weanlings, race fillies and broodmares will be offered.

Then it's down to Melbourne for the VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale, where 276 yearlings have been catalogued, where every yearling offered is Super VOBIS qualified and eligible to be nominated for the VOBIS Gold bonuses.

The sale is at Oaklands on Sunday April 22 from 10am.
