Sea the Moon German Oaks Trifecta

Tara Madgwick - Monday August 7

Best known in Australia as the Caulfield Cup winner Durston (GB), Lanwades Stud based sire Sea the Moon posted a unique achievement overnight when siring the trifecta in the Group I German Oaks (2200m).

Trained by Henk Grewe, the winner Muskoka scored by a neck over Kassada with Sea the Lady two lengths back in third.

“She's an unbelievably good filly with an incredible heart and fights her way past every horse in front of her,” Grewe said in his post race comments.

“She is very uncomplicated, she's easy to handle and has a huge heart. There are plenty of options open to her and the owners already have goals in mind. There's a nice race for her on Arc weekend and the Breeders' Cup is also under consideration.”

Already a Group III winner, Muskoka has a great record with four wins and two seconds from six starts and was bought as a yearling for 80,000 euros at BBAG September.

She is the best of three winners from unraced Peintre Celebre mare Morning Mist, a half-sister to 2017 Champion French 3YO  and dual Group I winner Brametot from the family of champion racehorse and sire Monsun.

Muskoka is the fourth Group I winner for Sea the Moon, who also sired this year’s German Derby winner Fantastic Moon, and his total of 29 stakes-winners are at the impressive strike rate of 8% SW to runner.

Sea the Moon is one of very few stallions to sire a G1 trifecta.

A memorable 11 length German Derby winner by Sea the Stars from a daughter of Monsun, Sea the Moon stands at a fee of 25,000 pounds.
