No protest this time as Interlocuter trots in

Tom Walter - Saturday October 7

Godolphin import Interlocuter rectified a controversial protest loss last month with an emphatic victory in the Adina Apartment Hotels Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Interlocuter was first past the post first-up over 1400m at Rosehill on September 9 but was demoted to second in favour of Wayanka after stewards upheld a protest from the Chris Waller stable.

The stewards' decision was met with remonstration on social media after Interlocuter had been heavily backed from $4.80 into a $3 favourite.

But the American-bred son of Medaglia D'oro made sure of the result second-up, starting a $2.40 favourite before bullocking clear at the top of the Randwick straight to win eased down by 2-3/4 lengths.

Trainer James Cummings said he is in no rush with the promising entire, now a three-time winner from five starts in Australia.

"We're just taking small steps with him at the moment," Cummings said.

"He's a beautiful animal with a big stride and he's appreciated having a little bit of time between runs.

"He went straight to 2100m second-up last preparation (when trained by John O'Shea) so in the back of my mind I didn't want to rush him too quickly.

"Nevertheless, we still had to pump the work into him to have him really screwed down to win over a mile second-up."

The Tim Martin-trained Mapmaker ($3.90) finished runner-up, a half-head clear of the third-placed Impavido ($6.50) for Bjorn Baker.
