Third Stakes Win for Charge Forward's Slightly Sweet
Mark Smith - Saturday, 15 July 2017

A timely reminder of the merits of the stallion Charge Forward when the Esplin family's homebred Slightly Sweet credited Jess Taylor with her first stakes winner in Saturday's $150,000 Listed ATC Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens.

After 12 seasons at Arrowfield Stud, Charge Forward is on the move in 2017 and will stand at Tim and Celie Nolan's Murrulla Stud, Wingen.

Carrying the Esplin colours of tartan, red sash and armbands, Slightly Sweet came from the three path with cover to defeat Man Of His Word (Lope de Vega) by a head with Elle Lou (Snitzel) a half-head back in third. (photo Steve Hart).

Winning trainer Jason Coyle credited the addition of blinkers for the mares improvement.

"This preparation the blinkers on have really turned her around after a really disappointing run first-up. It was the gear change she needed," Coyle said.

"Jess has ridden her a treat every time she's stepped out this preparation and it was nice to see her get that Listed win."

Coyle said Slightly Sweet's owners would make the decision whether to defer her career as a broodmare for another season.

"She's quite a valuable mare now - with a really nice pedigree but the owners usually like racing their mares on," Coyle said.

It was the third stakes win for the daughter of 5yo daughter of Charge Forward after the Group III Keith Nolen Classic and Group III ATC James HB Carr Stakes at three.

Slightly Sweet advances her record to 5 wins and 3 thirds from 25 starts for earnings of $481,685.

That's handy return for a filly they could not sell.

She was offered at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and National Yearling Sale but returned home both times.

The Esplin's not only bred Slightly Sweet but also her sire Charge Forward and the mother, Semitone.

Slightly Sweet is the first foal of Semitone, an unraced Dubai Destination (USA) half-sister to stakes-winner and Group 1 placed Stay Tuned (Marscay).

Semitone had an unraced 2yo filly by Equiano (Fr) named Sharp Tune, a yearling filly by Mossman and a weanling filly by Charge Forward.

She was covered by Choisir's 4-time Group I winning son Olympic Glory (IRE) last spring.

Charge Forward will stand at a fee of $8,800 at Murrulla Stud this year.
