Sixth Stakes Winner for Reward For Effort
Mark Smith - Saturday, 8 July 2017

Promising four-year-old gelding Ability made it three wins in as many starts this preparation while chalking up a maiden stakes success in Saturday's $150,000 Listed All Victorian Sprint Final (1200m) at Flemington.

Sporting the colours of the late Phil Sly, Ability burst between runners under Dwayne Dunn to defeat Duke Of Brunswick (Magnus) by a length with Ruettiger (Duporth) a long-head back in third.

The Robert Smerdon-trained son of Reward For Effort advances his record to 6 2 2 from 15 starts with earnings of $278,250.

"I had a beautiful run in transit. I was waiting for that run to open and when it did I speared him straight in there," Dunn said.

"It's amazing what a gelding operation has done for this horse. He showed top-class ability and obviously didn't live up to potential but now he is really putting a nice formline together."

Smerdon said an enforced layoff proved a blessing.

"He's manageable now and his brain is in the right spot. He had to have a bone chip removed and he had an enforced layoff," Smerdon said.

"He had four months (off) and he spelled really well and he came back a bigger physical.

"He's always been a lovely horse but now he is a bigger physical with a bigger brain and he has had a really good preparation."

Consigned to the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale by Yallambee Stud, Ability (pictured as a yearling) was knocked down to Matchem Racing for $150,000.

He is the third foal of the Dubai Destination mare Paeroa a half-sister to Group II winner Well Rounded (Reset) from the family of Campanologist (Kingmambo), Glorious Song (Halo), Singspiel (In The Wings) and Rahy (Blushing Groom).

Paeroa has a 2yo colt by Sebring named April Sun In Cuba who was bred by Peter Moody and sold for $160,000 to Henry Dwyer at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

At last year's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, Paeroa was sold to Hancock Quality Bloodstock for $70,000. She has a weanling colt by Helmet and was bred back to Reset last spring.

Ability becomes the sixth stakes winner for Chatswood Stud's Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel) who stands for a fee of $16,500 in 2017.
