Second Stakes for Clangalang's Tshahitsi
Mark Smith - Saturday, 8 July 2017

Tough-as-teak Tasmanian Tshahitsi may have ended his Victorian sojourn on a winning note with a typically gritty performance in Saturday's $150,0000 Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final (1600m).

Ridden by Brendon McCoull for trainers Chris Crook and Imogen Miller, Tshahitsi hit the front 300 metres from home, turning back several challengers most notably Chris Waller's Amovatio (Al Maher) who came within a half-neck, with Sovereign Nation (Encosta de Lago) a short-neck back in third. Winner of the $80,000 Echuca Cup (1400m) on May 28, Tshahitsi made it two in a row when successful at Flemington a fortnight later.

He prepped for the Winter Championship Series Final with a fighting third over 1400 metres at Flemington on June 24.

The son of Clangalang advances his record to 11 wins, 2 seconds and 2 thirds from 24 starts with earnings of $348,275

"I've always had a big opinion of him but you don't expect him to kick goals like he has since he's been here," Miller said

"We thought he would be competitive but he has gone above and beyond what we anticipated when we came over.

"He's so keen in his races we weren't sure he would settle and get the mile but he toughed out the 14 (1400m) last week and we thought why not.

"We haven't really got a plan for him we'll take it as it comes and we'll have a little think about it and see how he pulls up and go from there."

Winner of the Listed Newmarket Handicap at Launceston back in November, Tshahitsi is the fourth and final foal of the winning Grand Lodge mare Kita Ryokan who is also the dam of 7-times winner North Lodge (Festival Hall) and the winner Quirribilly Lodge (Matsqui) from the family of 4-time stakes-winner Cafeteria (Lunchtime).

The well-travelled AJC Derby hero Clangalang was purchased by Paul Geard in 2016 to stand at his GG Horse Stud at Broadmarsh.

The son of Clang is the sire of Geard's $1 million earner Geegees Blackflash.
