Arqana in August - The Source of Success
Breednet - Media Release - Friday, 7 July 2017
The ARQANA August yearling sale catalogue has for many years been a consistent source of high class horses for Australian owners.

Back in the late 1990s, Peter Maher was one of the trail-blazers and many have followed suit since.

Four years ago, Aussie agent Justin Bahen signed at €80,000 for a son of Starspangledbanner on behalf of a partnership of Australian friends – racing for Hugo Palmer as Home of the Brave went on to win at second asking as a juvenile, land the Listed European Free Handicap and the Group III Minstrel Stakes the following year before being sold on to Godolphin.

As early as last Thursday, DAYS GO BY, bought for €90,000 by British-based agent Stephen Hillen at the 2015 renewal won at Cranbourne for Ciaron Maher on her second outing.

On a global scale, 2017 has been a particularly prolific season for ARQANA yearling graduates with the winner of the legendary Epsom Derby WINGS OF EAGLES having been bought at Deauville for the first time in the history of the sales.

The son of Pour Moi was bred and consigned by Gilles and Aliette Forien's Haras de Montaigu before being purchased at the August Sale for €220,000 by M.V. Magnier.

Just 12 months earlier, the August catalogue had produced subsequent European Champion Three-Year-Old Colt ALMANZOR, bought for €100,000 and now the winner of three Group 1s. His return to the racetrack is eagerly awaited in the next few weeks.

Alongside ALMANZOR in the 2014 ARQANA catalogue was the very talented filly QEMAH, the recent winner of the Group II Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot following on from her Group I Coronation Stakes and Group I Prix Rothschild victories last year; MEKHTAAL, who won his first Group I in the Prix d'Ispahan lately, stepping up in grade once more after taking the Group II Prix Hocquart last season; the infamous PAKISTAN STAR, arguably one of the most talented as well as quirkiest horses in Hong Kong, etc.

More Group I winners such as SIGNS OF BLESSING, one of Europe's best sprinters, NATIONAL DEFENSE, winner of the Group I Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère in 2016, THE RIGHT MAN, who took the Group I Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan earlier this year, and recent Group Iplaced horses LE BRIVIDO, SISTERCHARLIE, SEA OF GRACE, were also purchased at ARQANA as yearlings.

The successors to these outstanding performers can without doubt be found in the 2017 August Yearling Sale catalogue, which is now available online.

FrankelIt contains 334 yearlings from the best French and European nurseries, to be offered from Saturday 19 to Monday 21 August around the Group I Prix Morny weekend.

International leading stallions are strongly represented in the catalogue, spearheaded by nine yearlings by Galileo, 10 by Frankel, four by Dubawi, two by the much-missed Scat Daddy and as many by Shamardal.

Not to be outdone, French-based stallions, which thanks to their produce have repeatedly shone on the international scene recently, are also well represented.

There are 24 yearlings by Le Havre, the largest amount in the catalogue; 23 by Le Brivido's sire Siyouni; 15 by Dabirsim, the only first season sire in Europe to have produced a Group winner so far in 2017 courtesy of DIFFERENT LEAGUE, jaw-dropping heroine of the Group III Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot; eight by Intello, already represented by some promising juveniles in his first crop; eight by Kendargent; six by ALMANZOR's sire Wootton Bassett; two by Style Vendome as well as one by Rajsaman, the sire of this year's dual Classic winner BRAMETOT.

Other established stallions also include: Cape Cross, Dark Angel, Dutch Art, Exceed and Excel, Iffraaj, Invincible Spirit, Kitten's Joy, Kodiac, Lope De Vega, Sea The Stars, etc.

The sale also gives buyers the first opportunity to discover yearlings by the exciting new sires Anodin, Australia, Charm Spirit, Kingman, No Nay Never, Olympic Glory, Slade Power, Toronado, Verrazano and War Command.
