now and again we run some editorial on Breednet that strikes a real chord with
the audience and our story So You Want to Breed a 'Serious Horse'? has done
just that and continues to attract feedback.

As a keen student of bloodlines and
someone who loves to look at the photos and videos of the weanlings and
yearlings I am pretty sure I can tell you the stallion that will provide the Australian
breeding industry with the next batch of "serious "horses and help
save us from OS horses dominating our mile plus group races, " Animal
Kingdom "
My two sires to hopefully get 1600m plus horses would be Reliable Man and Dundeel .
I hate all those 3yo colts that are rushed off to stud which means many weak
wfa races. Training on never affected Lonhro or Danewin.
Good article Tara. Couldn't agree with
you more. How about Puissance de Lune as a possibility?
You have missed the bleeding obvious… REBEL
RAIDER . Went to stud late in his first season. Only eight named 4yo's .
Most can run and six will win races, some better than average/
With his current 3yo's, Rebel Raider has 17 runners 9 winners inc 2SW and 2 SP.
I've retired now and I would hate to start out these days. Once there was
diversity and opportunity and you could trust your eye as a horseperson.
CONFORMATION was the key. It only took a few years before leading trainers came
looking for our 2-3 yearlings whether it be Adelaide (in the good old days ) or
Melbourne. Now the industry is dominated by a few (almost a cartel).
I think Pierro, Dundeel, Puissance de lune and perhaps Bullet Train could make it at getting horses that can run over a
bit of ground
I'm really glad for this
discussion. Along with the suggestions made already, I'd offer the brilliant
All Too Hard, for similar reasons to the suggestion of Pierro.
Casino Prince is a value for money stallion that in his short
stud career already has proven he can produce a "serious horse". In first crop
he produced ALL TOO HARD, sure he is out of Helsinge but Casino Prince
contributed in producing this serious horse all the same. A group winner at 2
in both Melbourne & Sydney it was as a three year old that ALL TOO HARD
became a champion in his own right. A brilliant winner of the Caulfield Guineas
(Gr.1 over 1600m) he was also second in the Cox Plate in the Spring of his 3yo
year. In the Autumn he defeated older horses to win all three of his starts
that preparation, the C.F. Orr Stakes Gr.1, Futurity Stakes Gr.1 and back to
Sydney for the All Aged Stakes Gr.1 all at 1400m. John Hawkes always stated we
didn't see the best of this Champion but his stud career was calling.
Is Casino Prince a one hit wonder. Not at all. Also out of his first crop was
South Australian Derby Gr.1 (2500m) winner ESCADO, a horse that as an older
horse also won two Group 3 races in Queensland and Victoria over 2000m.
Maybe not regarded as a "serious horse", but who wouldn't want to own a horse
that has won just short of $1million in prizemoney like another son of Casino
Prince in HOOKED has done. He won his first two starts in great fashion as a
two-year-old and was also given an opportunity to run in the Gr.1 J.J. Atkins
Stakes at that age. He was placed in an Australian Derby at 3 and as an older
horse has won two Group 2 races and two Group 3 races between 1400m and 1600m,
he has also contested 15 Group 1 races. He runs in this weekend's Stradbroke
Handicap which will take that tally to 16.
Son LIM's CRUSIER certainly looks a "serious" horse in Singapore this year
having won 6 of his 12 starts including the Sing-1 Lion City Cup over 1200m in
April this year.
Other quality racehorses Casino Prince has been able to produce include Star
Rolling (Gr.2 & LR winner between 1400m-1800m), Mighty Lucky (Two Gr.2's,
two LR's from 1300m to 2000m & $700,000 in prizemoney), Casino Dancer
(Gr.2, two Gr.3's from 1600m to 2000m & $500,000 in prizemoney), Longport
(Gr.2 winner at 1500m) , Fine Bubbles (Gr.3 winner over 1400m), Sookie (Gr.3
winner over 1350m), etc.
At $11,000 GST inc this coming breeding season you can't deny that Casino
Prince offers those breeders that are wanting to breed themselves a top quality
racehorse some great value. Also consider this. As of today (9thJune) he currently sits 10th on the Australian Sires list by
individual winners, putting him ahead of Lonhro, Exceed And Excel, More Than
Ready, Redoute's Choice, Medaglia d Oro, etc.
You wanted feedback on your article about serious breeding. All you have to do
is look at the number of sprints on a typical raceday card. You are lucky if
you get one middle distance a day.
Before I start I must admit I follow
thoroughbred breeding from afar , don't own any mares ( do have some small
racehorse shares )
Also not a student of crosses, nicks ratings etc . Not that I'm not interested
in them just working full time with kids doesn't allow much spare time!
Found your article very interesting and enlightening to how ' speed crazy ' we
have become . I often read articles about another boom 3yo being retired like
Star Turn , Extreme Choice , Flying Artie & even Divine Prophet more
recently . We know on breeding and racetracks performances that these young
sires aren't going to produce a 'classic type' but certainly should be early
running 2yos.
I know in recent years we have had a couple of Melbourne Cup winners go to stud
in Fiorente & Americain , hopefully we should see some classic
runners from them and a cups horse but unlikely to see them as 2yos .
That in mind I'm hopeful of horses like All
Too Hard , Pierro , Dundeel & Uncle Mo filling some sort of breach in
the ranks.
