Four wins in a row and a second stakes in a fortnight, Red Dazzler colt Pardoe is staking a strong case to contest next week's Group I JJ Atkins Stakes.
The Tony Sears-trained colt kept up a strong gallop under Hugh Bowman to lead all the way in Saturday's Listed The Phoenix (1350m) at Doomben by one and three-quarter lengths from Italia Bella (Fastnet Rock) with two lengths to
It advances the record of Pardoe to 4 wins, 1 second and 1 third from 7 starts with earnings of $174,450.
Pardoe had won the $100,000 Listed Oxlade Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on May 20.
Winning rider Hugh Bowman said Pardoe had given him little option but to lead.
"He wanted to overdo it in front, he'd probably be better with a little bit of cover," Bowman said.
"It made the win even better because he didn't relax that well for me.
"He's certainly got a bit of character about him.
"He's a very competitive young horse and very honest.
Trainer Tony Sears said he is still on the fence regarding next weeks JJ Atkins Stakes.
"My gut feeling is to say no but I've got an owner in Singapore who half owns him and the McAlpine family that own him here. He'd have to come through the run extremely well, there's not a lot of him but at this stage I don't really know, I'd be leaning to give him a bit of a break if he doesn't come through the run good.
"He's shown very good ability from the start.
"I thought he was a good thing going to the 1350 (metres). A lot of people thought he was just a wet-tracker but he is a pretty fair horse."
Passed in short of his $35,000 reserve at the 2016 Magic Millions March Yearling Sale, Pardoe (pictured as a yearling) is the fourth foal and third winner of the Rubiton mare Pardees who won twice and was multiple metropolitan placed in Melbourne.
Pardees is a three-quarter sister to stakes winner Personal Ensign the dam of the brilliant Fontiton (Turffontein) the winner of the Group III Blue Diamond Prelude and Group III Blue Diamond Preview in addition to the valuable Inglis Banner.
Fontiton was purchased as a broodmare prospect for $1.1 million. She was knocked down to Henry Field for US-based SF Bloodstock and visited Written Tycoon last spring.
Purchased by the McAlpine's Eureka Stud for $20,000 at the 2007 Inglis Great Southern Sale, Pardees has been covered by Red Dazzler in her first 10 seasons at stud.
Her yearling filly did not meet her $25,000 reserve at the recent Magic Millions March sale.
She has a weanling colt and was bred back to the son of Red Ransom last spring.
