First Winner for Ambidexter

Mark Smith - Sunday May 28

The Darren Weir-trained Avanti Rose made a winning career debut in an all-aged maiden over 1000 metres at Warracknabeal on Saturday to credit Cornerstone Stud's Ambidexter with his first winner.

The heavily backed favourite was driven to the lead by Liam Riordan from an outside barrier. She found plenty in the straight to defeat the fast-finishing Bel Esprit gelding Wanna Be Good by a neck with 4yo mare Dash For May three-quarters of a length back in third.

A $20,000 purchase by Darren Weir Racing/John Foote Bloodstock from the Ashmore Thoroughbreds draft at the second session of the 2016 MM Adelaide Yearling Sale, Avanti Rose is the second foal of the winning Charge Forward mare Tassa Avanti a winning half-sister to dual Listed stakes winner La Chasseuse (Lion Hunter).

A descendant of the renowned broodmare Dark Jewel, Avanti Rose comes from the first crop of 37 live foals sired by the Group II STC Theo Marks Stakes winner and Group I AJC Epsom Handicap runner-up Ambidexter.

A brother to Group I Champagne Stakes winner Skilled and half-brother to popular young Darley stallion Sidestep, Ambidexter is a son of Commands out of the Group II Sandown Guineas winner Dextrous (Quest For Fame) a granddaughter of Emancipation's half-sister Deliberation.

Ambidexter stands at Cornerstone Stud where his 2017 fee has been set at $5,500.
