Ladies First (NZ) (Dylan Thomas), who cost just $8000 as a weanling at the 2014 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, became a stakes winner with an impressive performance in Saturday's $50,000 Listed James Bull Rangitikei Gold Cup (1550m) at Awapuni.
Ridden by Lisa Allpress for New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock, the four-year-old raced midfield before overpowering her rivals in the straight to score an emphatic win by two lengths.
By Dylan Thomas out of the Group 3-winning Dehere mare Just Polite , Ladies First was bred by Go Bloodstock. Offered by Blandford Lodge at the 2014 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, she was bought for $8000 by Humphrey O'Leary who races her in partnership with wife Fiona.
Ladies First has now had nine starts for five wins, two placings and prize-money of $87,875 – almost 11 times her purchase price.
"We've been targeting this race for a long time and she won it well," Sharrock said. "I'm very happy for the owners. They're great people and they've got their black type."
