Ninth Stakes Win for Local Hero Riziz

Mark Smith - Sunday April 30

At the ripe old age of eight, local hero Riziz smashed the million dollar barrier when earning his ninth stakes victory in Saturday's $110,000 Listed City Of Adelaide Stakes at Morphettville.

Ken Sweeney's grand campaigner has contested no less than 38 stakes races in his long and distinguished career. In addition to his nine wins, he has also placed 10 times in an overall record that reads 15 wins, 10 seconds and 7 thirds from 55 starts with earnings of $1,039,375.

"How good was that?'' Sweeney told the Adelaide Advertiser.

"He's been, and he still is, a great horse. I'm a bit overcome.''

The staked run kicked off almost seven years ago when the son of Zariz won the Adelaide Guineas before crossing the Victorian border to claim the Cresswick Stakes at Flemington.

Riziz has had three shots at the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap and he will give it another try this year.

At his first attempt in 2013 he was seventh to Platelet, in 2014 finished third to Smokin' Joey and Platelet, and beat just one of the 17 runners home in 2015.

He missed the race last year but it is back on the agenda.

Bred and part-owned by his trainer, Riziz is the second foal of the twice winning Covetous mare Priya who was purchased as a yearling by Sweeney in 2005 for $15,000.

It is a pedigree devoid of stakes winners for many generations before being lit up by Riziz.

Priya has been a regular visitor to Kooringal Stud's Zariz in recent years, being covered by the son of Mukaddamah for the past five seasons.

She has a yearling colt and a weanling filly and was covered by Zariz again last season.
