Late season likely types at the Randwick trials

Breednet - Wednesday April 19
A couple of likely types from the early season trials last September trialled impressively in the juvenile heats at the Randwick barrier trials on Tuesday, indicating they could be late season bloomers.

Conservation as a yearlingBoth Piracy and Conservation won their respective heats at the official Randwick two-year-old trials last year but their seasons stalled shortly after, with Conservation not being seen in public at all since and Piracy producing a couple of disappointing performances in his only two starts when well among the favourites.

They were in the same heat at the Randwick trials on Tuesday with Piracy finishing second and Conservation third, and both going well enough to have them on the radar when produced under race conditions.

Conservation is a $160,000 Easter purchase by Choisir, and the first foal of Forest Beauty (Thorn Park), a half-sister to Group I winner Mourinho and Group III winner Molto Bene.

Piracy is by Exceed and Excel from former smart juvenile Plagiarize, and while he disappointed when produced in the Breeders Plate on debut and then when fifth of five behind Menari in January, he was produced yesterday as a gelding for the first time.

The heat was won by I Am Lexus, a $650,000 Scone Yearling Sale recruit by I Am invincible from Lady Lexus.

Another of the beaten brigade that showed up impressively was Hualalai, which finished third behind Angel's Joy (Snitzel x Angel Girl) in Heat 14 after giving away a big start when slow to jump.

Trained by the Waterhouse/Bott team, Hualalai was a $625,000 Easter buy, being by Street Cry out of Group I Coolmore Classic winner Aloha.

He hasn't shown up in two starts so far, the latest when 5th in the Canonbury Stakes (Group III), but with a bit more maturity and the longer races coming up in this latter part of the season his chance is coming.

The other two year-old heat winners over the short course 735 metres included Grand Theft Auto (Sebring x Catch A Thief and I Am Excited (Snitzel x Lady Beckworth).

There were two 1050 metre heats for the babies as well with the winners Lucky Hada (Testa Rossa x Lucky Morna) and Sacher Torte (Lonhro x Viennese).
