Third to Gingernuts in the Group II Avondale Guineas, Mongolian Wolf finished down the track behind that horse in the Group I New Zealand Derby, so was fresh for this assignment having not raced since early March.
Now racing in the colours of Australian Bloodstock, Monoglian Wolf (image Steve Hart) found the line strongly out wide to score a length and a quarter win in the 2000 metre staying test taking his overall record to four wins from nine starts with prizemoney topping $125,000.
"He's a lovely horse and the Kiwis have dominated our carnival, so I was always confident I was on the right horse," said winning rider Brenton Avdulla.
Mongolian Wolf is a sale ring veteran, sold as a weanling at Magic Millions for $8,000, then as a yearling at Magic Millions National for $30,000 to New Zealand based Regal Farm.
They re-offered him at the NZB Ready to Run Sale where he fetched $200,000 when bought by Rider Horse China and since then he has been sold privately to Australian Bloodstock.
Bred by Hillside Parade Racing and Breeding, Mongolian Wolf is the best of two winners from Oomaroo, an unraced half-sister by Tale of the Cat (USA) to Group II winner Thump from stakes-winner Oomph.
Mongolian Wolf is the second stakes-winner for Vinery Stud's Pluck, a US bred son of their champion sire More Than Ready (USA).
With his oldest progeny just three year-olds, Pluck remains on the Vinery roster this spring at a fee of $9,900.
