Makfi's Tribal Wisdom Pulls Of Shock in Gosford Guineas

Mark Smith - Friday March 31

Friday's $150,000 Listed Pluim Group Gosford Guineas (1200m) looked to be going to script when race favourite I Thought So burst to the front down the home straight, however greenness in the final 100 metres enabled the Michael Moroney-trained Tribal Wisdom to get up in the last stride.

Second last in the early stages under Christian Reith, Tribal Wisdom followed I Thought So into the straight but he looked to running out of ground, as I Thought So set up a handy lead.

But Hugh Bowman was on one rein on the son of So You Think allowing Makfi (GB) colt Tribal Wisdom to get up by a nose.

Sepoy colt War Hero was beaten three and a half lengths into third however he was obliged to race three and four wide the trip and a bit of black-type will add some value to his full-brother (lot 38) to be offered in the Turangga Stud draft at next week's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale.

Tribal Wisdom won over 1205 metres when making his career debut at Sale on February 17 before being beaten less than four lengths when unplaced at his most recent start at Flemington.

"He was slow to step, he was playing up a little bit and just turned his head at the wrong time," Reith told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

"I think it was actually a godsend as he got some nice cover.

"He travelled well, got a little bit keen coming to the corner and got up on their backs a bit too soon but once he got out he really lengthened well."

Moroney stable representative Nerissa Copp, said Tribal Wisdom will improve when he gets out to a distance longer than 1200 metres.

"He's only just come up from Melbourne, he'll be better over 1400(m) and he's not necessarily a 1200(m) horse," Cropp said.

"He finished really strongly and he's here for the rest of the carnival now."

Raced by a syndicate of some of the industries heavy hitters, Tribal Wisdom is the first foal of the talented Redoute's Choice mare Platinum Passion.

A 4-time winner and placed in the Group II Sunline Stakes and Group III Matron Stakes, Platinum Passion was purchased by Arrowfield Stud for $270,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare sale when carrying a So You Think filly.

That filly was purchased by Kris Lees for $200,000 at last year's Easter Yearling sale.

A half-sister to dual Group II winner and Group I placed My Tusker, Platinum Passion is a granddaughter of the champion Horlicks who is the dam of Moroney's Melbourne Cup hero Brew and Group II Avondale Guineas winner Bubble and the granddam of Group I ATC Derby and BMW Stakes winner Fiumicino and Group II Chairman's handicap winner Tremec.

After missing to Dundeel in 2014, Platinum Passion has a colt foal by the champion son of High Chaparral and was covered by him again last spring.

Tribal Wisdom becomes the 15th stakes winner for Makfi (GB).

The son of Dubawi was sold last year to stand at stud in Japan.
