Street Cry's Tally Captures Mornington Cup

Mark Smith - Sunday March 26

Winless for over 12 months, Godolphin's Street Cry (IRE) gelding Tally earned as free ticket into the Caulfield Cup by winning a tragedy-marred $300,000 Listed Ladbrokes Mornington Cup (2400m) on Saturday.

Shortly after the winning post, the Godolphin-owned The Gold Trail, who finished fourth, fractured his near fore sesamoid sending Craig Williams crashing to the turf.

Ridden by Andrew Mallyon for trainer John O'Shea, Tally ($8) edged out a gallant Vengeur Masque (IRE) (Monsun) by a half-head with Settler's Stone (Savoire Vivre) one and a quarter length back in third. (photo Grant Courtney).

It was the culmination of a big 24 hours for the Mallyon family after Andrew's sister Katelyn won her first Group 1 on Silent Sedition in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Tally advances his record to 6 wins, 3 seconds and 4 thirds from 19 starts with earnings of $820,110.

"It went a little bit pear-shaped out of the barrier as I wanted to be a bit closer but he just didn't jump cleanly," Mallyon said.

"I was a bit hesitant to dig him up with the blinkers back on and he relaxed lovely for me.

"From the 1000(m) I was able to get on the back of the right horses and everything and he was really strong at the finish.

"Obviously it's very sad with what has happened to the other Godolphin horse but this is at least a silver lining."

Tally reeled off four consecutive wins last season including the Group II Autumn Classic at Caulfield and the Group II Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley.

He rounded out his classic season with a third behind Tavago and Jameka in the ATC Australian Derby at Randwick.

It has been leaner pickings this season although the son of Street Cry (IRE) placed in the Group I Turnbull Stakes, Group III Lexus Stakes and Group III Carlyon Cup.

Bred by Darley Stud, Tally is the sixth foal of Itemise (USA), a daughter of the former leading Kentucky-based stallion Kris S, who won the Listed STC Winter Cup and ran second in a Group 1 AJC Metropolitan.

Itemise (USA) had five winners from as many foals when Darley consigned her to the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare sale.

In foal to Bernardini (USA), Itemise was knocked down to Ladyship Lodge for $41,000.

She has a 2yo colt, yearling colt and colt foal all by Bernardini (USA).
