Redoute's Choice Colt Earns a Shot at ATC Derby

Mark Smith - Saturday March 18

Highly enough regarded by connections to tackle the Group I Randwick Guineas on March 4, royally-bred Redoute's Choice colt Hardham returned home to claim Friday night's $200,000 Group II Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

Sporting the colours of Peter and Sarah Moody, the David Brideoake-trained colt came from midfield under Luke Nolen to power passed the favoured pair of Ruthven (Domesday) and Farson (Snitzel) to win by three-quarters of a length. (photo Darryl Sherer).

Purchased by Moody Racing for $300,000 from the Broadwater Thoroughbreds draft at the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale, Hardham was originally trained by Peter Moody before a short spell with Mick Price.

He was having his third start for David Brideoake who took over his training at the start of the year.

Winless in five starts this season, Hardham was winning for the first time since opening his winning account when making his career debut at Pakenham over 12 months ago.

The son of Redoute's Choice has some high-powered owners including Sir Patrick Hogan and the colt's breeder Dr. Gene Tsoi.

Brideoake said a trip back to Sydney for a tilt at the Group I Australian Derby at Randwick is on the cards.

He's a very capable horse who has been looking for a trip, great ride tonight and he finished it off really well.

The wet track didn't suit him in the Randwick Guineas but he still ran a very honest race. Back on top of the ground suited him beautifully tonight.

A couple of weeks in Sydney (for the ATC Derby) is where we'll go.

Hardham is a brother to millionairess King's Rose winner of eight stakes races including the Group I New Zealand 1000 Guineas and Group II Memsie Stakes.

The now Japanese based mare is the dam of the high-class Satono Arthur (Deep Impact) who won his only two starts at Hanshin last year before making his seasonal bow in February when second in the Group III  Kisaragi Sho at Kyoto.

Satono Arthur had been purchased for $A2.1 million by  Hajime Satomi at the 2015 JRHA Select Sale.

Hardham and King's Rose are out of Nureyev's Girl (Nureyev) who has a yearling filly (pictured) by Exceed And Excel in the Bhima Stud draft heading to the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale (lot 267).

She is the penultimate foal of Nureyev's Girl who died last September after foaling a Snitzel filly.

Hardham becomes the 141st stakes winner for Arrowfield's flagship Redoute's Choice who has a quality draft of 36 heading to the Easter Yearling sale. (View them here)
