Snitzel Powers On

Mark Smith - Sunday March 5

With two new stakes winners and placegetters in the Group I Australian Guineas, Group II Todman Stakes, Group II Challenge Stakes and Listed Cinderella Stakes, Snitzel powers on at the head of affairs for leading sire and leading sire and 2-year-old sire.

The Arrowfield stallion even had a placegetter at Ellerslie when 3yo filly Royal Fashion went down narrowly in the Group III Mongolian Khan Trophy (1200m).

But it was on the bottomless track at Randwick where Snitzel did his best work.

While the promising 2yo colt Invader was edged out by Gunnison in the Group II Todman Stakes and Redzel was edged out by English in a pulsating finish to the Group II Challenge Stakes, Snitzel came up trumps with first time stakes winners Samantha in the Listed Fireball Stakes and the 5yo mare Elle Lou added some priceless black-type  in the Group III Aspiration Quality (1600m). As much as she levelled in the conditions the Chris Waller-trained mare seems to reserve her best for Glyn Schofield who has four wins and two places from his seven rides on the mare.

That included a third behind the sadly missed Pearls and the high-class Dixie Blossoms in the Toy Show Quality at his seasonal bow last August.

"Full credit to Glyn Schofield," Waller said.

"He actually drew the outside but came closest to the fence and saved a bit of ground.

"I think it might have been the winning difference. He has an amazing record on her."

A $70,000 purchase out of the Widden Stud consignment at the 2013 Magic Millions National Yearling sale, Elle Lou advances her overall record to 7 wins, 4 seconds and 2 thirds from 26 starts with earnings of $454,125.

She is closely inbred to Snippets, the sire of the dam of Snitzel and the sire of Elle Lou's dam Snipify who was a handy racemare in her own right winning five and placing in six of her 21 starts and stakes-placed in Adelaide.

From a very solid winning family highlighted by Pontormo's win in the Group I Honda Stakes, Snipify has an unraced 2yo gelding named Algonquin Lake and a Snitzel colt foal born on September 7. She was covered by Snitzel again last spring.

Elle Lou becomes the 54th stakes winner for Snitzel who has 44 lots catalogued for Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale beginning on April 4. View them here.
