One to Watch - Randwick Wednesday

Breednet - Wednesday February 15
The consensus is it will be a strong form race and this beautifully bred filly should take improvement after the luck went her way to score a debut win at Randwick on Wednesday.

Villa Carlotta, after being easy in the market, unleashed a powerful finish at just the right time to take advantage of the misfortune of short priced favourite Alizee which was strung up between runners at the time to record a brave victory.

Street CryWinning trainer James Cummings afterwards suggested a bright future aimed at stakes grade for Villa Carlotta.

"Even though these aren't the pre-Christmas city two-year-olds, I think this is a pretty strong form race and the way she ambled up three and four wide around the bend and then held off the fast finisher – there was plenty of style about the win," Cummings said.

"We're really looking forward to see what she can do for us in the next few starts."

Cummings suggested the Group II Riesling Stakes (1200m) back at Randwick on March 4 as possibility for Villa Carlota's next start.

"It looks like she's got the quality to be considering those sorts of races," he said.

Today's race has something of an interesting history being that it was moved to day after originally scheduled for last Saturday's Kembla Grange meeting which was abandoned due to the extreme heat.

Whilst only a maiden it was the only opportunity for non-Inglis sold youngsters to race within the Sydney area six weeks out from the Golden Slipper given the only juvenile race at Randwick was the $250,000 Inglis Classic restricted to horses sold at the Classic Yearling Sale.

It's a scenario that last year saw the same Kembla Grange maiden won by Exosphere, subsequent winner of the Group I Golden Rose and it would be fair to assume, give the representation of major Sydney stables in this race, it will again prove a formline worth following.

Bred and retained to race by Fairway Thoroughbreds, who famously bred and sold sold Australian Horse of the Year Winx, Villa Carlotta is by Street Cry out of Florentina, a Group III winner by Redoute's Choice from the family of Redoute's Choice.

While she wasn't offered for sale, there is however a nice catalogue update for her half-sister by Medaglia D'Oro which will be offered at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale by Segenhoe Stud as Lot 143.
