By his own high standards, Exceed And Excel had a relatively quiet time of it with his juveniles last season, missing the top ten on earnings for the first time in seven years, but he is back in familiar territory this season with only the runaway leader Snitzel and the red-hot I Am Invincible ahead of him.
His latest winner comes with Godolphin's Coruscate, a three-quarter brother to the 4-time Group 1 winner Guelph, who made a sparkling career debut at Canterbury on Friday night.
Coruscate was the best to begin for James Doyle who was happy to hand up to the grey Albumin with Coruscate's stablemate Sedition on his outside.
Doyle moved the son of Exceed And Excel to the three wide
Albumin (Foxwedge) didn't give in a without a fight, however, Coruscate got the upper hand to win by three-quarters of a length with Sedition (Exceed And Excel) the same distance back in third.
Coruscate descends from a family that has served Darley well since making its foray into Australia.
His dam Dazzler (More Than Ready) won her first two starts at Geelong and Flemington when trained by Peter Snowden.
She is the first foal of the Group 1 AJC Sires' Produce winner Camarilla (Elusive Quality) who besides Guelph produced the Group II Todman Stakes winner Ghibellines (Shamardal).
Sadly, Camarilla died after following the Street Cry colt Inner Circle although her dam, the Group 1 Queensland Derby heroine Camarena (Danehill) is still going strongly.
She has a yearling filly by Lonhro and a filly foal by Hallowed Crown and was covered late in the season last year by Shooting To Win.
Dazzler has a yearling colt and colt foal by Exceed And Excel and was covered last spring by Medaglia d'Oro (USA).
