Working Class Hero Becomes a Millionaire

Mark Smith - Thursday January 26

Nick Moraitis' eight-year-old warhorse Destiny's Kiss took his earning passed $1 million when defending his title under topweight of 59.5 kgs in Thursday's $150,000 Listed Vili's Pies Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Randwick.

Owner of the world-class Might and Power, Moraitis has had the last laugh after Destiny's Kiss failed to meet his modest $8,000 reserve at the 2010 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

It was the sixth stakes win for the son of Power Of Destiny who won the race last year with just 0.5 kgs less.

Ridden by Brenton Avdulla for trainer Joe Pride, Destiny's Kiss made his run closest to the rails to overpower Shalmaneser (Teofilo) by three-quarters of a length with Foreign Prince (High Chaparral) two and a half lengths back in third.

It advances the overall record of Destiny's Kiss to 15 wins, 5 seconds and 9 thirds from 65 starts with earnings of $1,040,403.

"He's such a little horse with such a big heart and he really deserved that win today," Pride's racing manager Hayley Devlin said.

"We usually see him come down the outside but when it got to putting the pressure on he let down beautifully.

"I think based on the chat we had with the owners today we will probably give him a spell – he's broken the $1 million mark so I think that deserves a holiday more than anything."

A half-brother to another good money spinner, Emerald City (Bernardini),  Destiny's Kiss is out of the stakes-placed Stravinsky (USA) mare A Fairy's Kiss who is a sister to Listed stakes winner and Group 1 VRC Oaks runner-up Miss Scarlatti and a half-sister to Listed stakes winner Abidewithme (Redoute's Choice).

A Fairy's Kiss has a 2yo colt by So You Think, a yearling colt by Pierro and a Star Witness filly foaled on November 17.
