Sire Profitability at the Magic Millions

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 24
With a buoyant market at Magic Millions this year many breeders enjoyed positive returns and particularly those who chose a well-priced stallion in 2014.

Written TycoonIn recent years the sire profitability table has been topped by Yarraman Park's I Am Invincible, but with his yearlings this year conceived at the higher fee of $27,500 he dropped back to second this year to make way for Woodside Park's Written Tycoon, who returned a staggering 22.4 times fee!

The reigning Champion Australian 2YO Sire, Written Tycoon covered 212 mares last spring at a fee of $49,500, but for those breeders who saw his brilliance earlier, the yearling sales are happy days this year!

I Am Invincible had his fee bumped to $55,000 for 2015 and 2016 and has covered over 400 mares in that period, so he too is on a steep upward trajectory.

He has been a massive winner for the breeders that picked and supported him early.

The sire profitability table frequently finds that next up and coming sire as he's a horse that often impresses in the sale ring first as did I Am Invincible, who first appeared on this list as a freshman sire in 2013.

That year, I Am Invincible had nine yearlings average $81,667, a sum 7.4 times his service fee. His Magic Millions average this year soared to $318,205!

The list below of the Top 20 Most Profitable Sires (sorted by multiple of fee) highlights some of the current up and coming sires with the highest placed freshman sire this year being Eureka Stud's Spirit of Boom, featured in this story.

It should be noted that the Top 20 this year are the most profitable as a group since we started presenting this table in 2012.

Usually at the bottom of the Top 20, the sires are returning around four times service fee and this year the bottom is 6.7.

Strong demand driving yearling prices upward (the save average was $205,142), coupled with what in hindsight appear to be generally quite reasonable service fees in 2014 have made this a very good year for the breeder.

2014 was the year Fastnet Rock was listed with a private fee as the most expensive sire in Australia with everyone else coming in below, Redoute's Choice and Exceed and Excel the next best at $110,000 followed by Lonhro $88,000, Pierro $77,000 and Snitzel $71,500.

Redoute's Choice, Exceed and Excel and Fastnet Rock were the top three sires by average at Magic Millions reflecting their status as the most expensive sires in the year their progeny were conceived.
