Paul
Whelan of Luskin Park and Wilf Mula of Aston Bloodstock have had an amazing
year in racing thanks to the success of horses such as Flying Artie, but it was
their 6yo Snitzel gelding Le Cordon Bleu that put the icing on the cake with a
fast finishing win in the Listed ATC Canterbury Stakes on New Year's Eve.
Rebounding from an out of character last at Rosehill on November 19, the Hawkes
Racing trained gelding flew home from dead last to score a three-quarter length
win in the 1200 metre sprint.
"The true Le Cordon Bleu came out today and justice has prevailed,"
Michael Hawkes, who trains in partnership with his father John and brother
Wayne said.
"Last start we couldn't find anything wrong with him. I know they said in
the vet's report that there was an issue but he's trialled since then. He's
done everything right.
"Christian (Reith) gave him a gun ride. Got out at the right time and just
hit his straps."
A $350,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Luskin Park draft for John O'Shea
Racing, Le Cordon Bleu (image Steve Hart) was initially trained by O'Shea before his decision to
take on the role of head trainer for Godolphin.
With five wins from 16 starts, he has won over $345,000 for his owners, who
include Paul Whelan and Wilf Mula.
The 47th stakes-winner for Snitzel, Le Cordon Bleu is the best of four foals to
race from stakes-winner Ultimate Fever, whose current yearling, another colt by
Snitzel will be offered by Luskin Park at Magic Millions as Lot 549.
The brother to Le Cordon Bleu is one of eight yearlings headed to the Gold
Coast for Luskin Park, four of them by his sire Snitzel including a half-sister
to stakes-winner Dublin Lass. Click here to see them.
