Japanese Group 1 Winner Has Australian Connections

Mark Smith - Sunday December 18

Mi Suerte failed to give Frankel a second Group 1 winner in Japan in the space of seven days when she finished fourth in Sunday's The Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes (1600m) at Hanshin, however the winner's pedigree is very familiar to Australians.

Hajime Satomi has enjoyed a wonderful run of success of late with the likes of Satomi Diamond and Satomi Crown and his homebred Deep Impact colt Satono Ares kept the run going when beating Monde Can Know (Kinshasa no Kiseki) by a half-length with Bom Servico (Daiwa Major) two lengths back in third. It was the third consecutive win for the Kazuo Fujisawa-trained colt who finished second at his first two starts.

Satono Ares is out of the Irish-bred mare Satono Amazones whose track career was restricted to three starts, winning a Fukushima Maiden and finishing second at Tokyo.

A daughter of Danehill, Satono Amazones was the first foal born in Ireland when the Artichoke mare Prawn Cocktail (USA) returned home after eight seasons in Australia.

A big hit in the sales ring, Prawn Cocktail's popularity did not always translate to success on the track.

Most notable among a series of high-priced yearlings was Satono Amazones' brother Overlord a $2.2 million Easter Yearling who returned $12,000 on the track with his lone win in six starts coming in a Sunshine Coast maiden.

But the cross with Danehill had better luck with the Group II VRC Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) winner Langoustine and the Group III VRC Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes winner One World.

Both Langoustine and One World sold for $500,000 as yearlings and would later increase their value.

One World sold 10 years later for $720,000, while Langoustine continued her stud career in Ireland after John Warren paid $US900,000 for her at the 2002 November Breeding Stock Sale at Keeneland.

One World is the dam of the 2011 Group III MRC Blue Diamond Prelude and Listed MRC Blue Diamond Preview winner One Last Dance (Encosta de Lago).

Owned by Fairways Thoroughbreds, One Last Dance did not have a live foal in her first four seasons at stud. She was covered by Redoute's Choice in February this year and was exported to Ireland so hopefully there will be better news in a few week's time.

The pedigree certainly received an important update on Sunday.
