Qewy Tops Off Successful Carnival for Godolphin

Mark Smith - Saturday November 12

Quickly building himself a cult following from his three starts in Australia, Qewy (IRE) justified his short-priced favouritism when galloping his opponents into submission in Saturday's $150,000 Listed Ladbrokes Sandown Cup (3200m).

Winner of the Group III Geelong Cup (2400m) for Kerrin McEvoy, Qewy (IRE) covered himself in glory when a brave fourth under Craig Williams in the Group I Melbourne Cup.

Reunited with McEvoy here, Qewy (IRE) kept up a relentless gallop but did not have everything his own way in the closing stages.

The Charlie Appleby-trained Street Cry (IRE) gelding found a willing opponent in another import, the Aaaron Purcell-trained Swacadelic (GER) (Adlerflug ) who was closest at the finish to fall a half-neck short.

"He's a lovely big horse and he's got a lovely attitude," McEvoy said. "It's hard to run again after a Melbourne Cup but he was nice and bright when I got on him.

"He's a battle-hardened horse and once he got into a nice rhythm I was always confident."

Godolphin representative James Ferguson said the Sandown Cup topped off a great carnival for the Godolphin imports that included wins in the Geelong Cup, Bendigo Cup, Lexus Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

"For him ( Qewy) to win this it just tops it all off," Ferguson said.

"It was a great ride from Kerrin. The horse had a hard race in the Melbourne cup and pulled out all the stops today, I'm absolutely delighted.

The support from the whole racing community has been huge. He has become a bit of a favourite, everyone asking about him, which is great.

"He's a bit of a jumper so we knew he could stay. It's just a great thrill for everyone to come here on the last day and win."

"We brought the right profile of horse over and they have all thrived."

A three-quarter brother to Group II Lancashire Oaks winner Emirates Queen and half-brother to the Listed stakes winner Jordan Princess (Cape Cross), Qewy is a son of champion stallion Street Cry (IRE) out of the stakes-winning Barathea mare Princess Nada who is a half-sister to Darley's outstanding stallion Dubawi.
