The
Fasig-Tipton November Sale always produces stellar results as some of the world's
most desirable mares go under the hammer.
The sale was topped by the $3.5 million bid of John Malone's Bridlewood Farm
for Baffled, a daughter of Distorted Humor in foal to
North America's leading sire Tapit. A proven stakes producer, she is the dam of
three Graded winners including Florida Derby winner Constitution and Group III
winner Jacaranda, who made $2million at this sale in foal to Candy Ride.
The auction grossed $54,152,000 for the 88 horses sold, compared with 92 horses
that brought a total $43,666,000 a year ago.
The average soared to $615,364 from the 2015 figure of $474,630 and the median
of $377,500 was well above the $235,000 last year.
15 mares sold for $1million or more with other star performers being Group I
winners Curalina and Stopchargingmaria, who sold for $3million and $2.8 million
to Shadai Farm and Three Chimneys.
The November sale also featured the dams of Arrogate and California Chrome, who
filled the quinella in the Group I Breeder's Cup Classic on Sunday.
While Love the Chase, the dam of California Chrome, sold for $1.95 million to
bloodstock agent John McCormack, Bubbler, the dam of Arrogate failed to sell at
$4.7 million.
"Every man and woman has a right to put a value on their horse," said Fasig-Tipton
president and CEO Boyd Browning Jr.
"There were no tears from the consignor on the most expensive horse that was
bought back tonight. They have a collector's item and they were prepared to keep
the horse if the market didn't meet their expectations. And that's the beauty
of the market process. It tries to create a fair environment for both the buyer
and the seller and sometimes those expectations don't always match up."
